How to Place a 3 D OR Photo Deer Decoy

Normally the placement of a decoy would be done to attract game with little worry of  safety. Turkey, Duck, Goose etc. are mostly hunted with Shot Guns and this means that someone walking up on your decoys is most likely going to be seen if they are in range.

However with a 3D Or Photo Deer Decoy that has recently come onto the market, a hunter could be more than 100 yards away using a high power rifle and not be able to see you. If you are hunting from a Tree Blind this is less of a worry,  but for old fogie's like myself who prefer a Ground Blind the placement of the decoy is tantamount to putting yourself in the cross hairs. Below is a crudely drawn blind placement diagram.
The Line in the  middle is how I personally place a PHOTO  Decoy that I own.
I sit in FRONT of the head or BEHIND the Tail.  The decoy is placed in this diagram from Left to Right. The X is the danger zone OR the View where the Photo Decoy is visible and can be shot at, without the other hunter seeing YOU.

The Blind is placed in FRONT of or Behind because a hunter approaching from that direction he will only see a sliver and be unable to identify the decoy as a deer. The blind should be placed outside the X Danger zone. ( Diagramed as an Hourglass)

Placing the decoy sideways allows another hunter to see it and possibly shoot at it from a long distance. High Powered Rifle shots of 100 to 200 yards on deer are not impossible and the trajectory could put you in danger if you are in the Danger Zone.

Stay outside the Danger Zone by thinking of where a hunter would shoot and that is where YOU should not be down range from. The Closer to Head on or BEHIND the Deer Decoy that you are the safer you are in your placement of both 3D and Photo Decoys. Another possible safety precaution is to place an orange plastic on the neck of the deer. Hunters will see this, and should NOT shoot, although this is NOT a guarantee. It is only a means to preserving your decoy. Since Deer only see in black, grey and white, the orange safety tape should not be seen.  You can test it using your digital camera and a Black and White setting. Some orange will show as white which would spook the deer. Most will show as grey and blend into the deer's coloring. This is only recommended for severely over run public hunting areas.  On Private Property you are less likely to have this problem.
